Reality television, a genre that did not exist 20 years ago; now consumes modern day programming and invites us to indulge in someone else’s life journey.
Quite intriguing right!
Whether or not we are willing to admit it, reality television draws us all in as there is something for everyone. No matter how over-the-top a character’s struggle appears, the average person can always find them relatable in some way; which keeps us all tuned in. Sometimes, it is to the point where we become emotionally attached to characters and feel that we know them on a first-name basis.
“Reality Tv is make or break, it will either take you to the top or destroy your name, future legacy and everything”
Reality television comes with its risks and consequences depending on the participant’s choices which are on display for the public, which allows us to escape from our own “reality” which is why we gravitate to reality stars that seem to have problems and life dilemmas that are bigger than our own.
Our COVER PERSONALITY, Uti Nwachukwu lets us in on his journey so far and specific details that make him the man we all know and love today;
“I have always been an advocate for reality Tv, which made me try out the “Next movie star” in 2007, but was shot to the limelight by “Big Brother Africa”. I have always had a flair for presenting and acting, Reality Tv was the channel I used to propel myself”
He didn’t fail to remind us that for this to work one has to be career specific.
“I was career specific, because becoming a fame whore will not keep you interesting for a long time. Most youths have no focus they just want to be Instagram famous.”
After his competition as a contestant in Big Brother Africa 5: All-Stars; in which he lasted 91 days and ultimately won by defeating Munya in a final vote of 8 to 7, he has so far featured in several movies since then and the official host of Jara; a television series produced by African Magic, packed with fun news and information, direct from the thriving heart of Africa’s busiest film hub.
Being the youngest child of the family, it was easier for him to embark on such risks, in his own words.
“I didn’t tell my parents the first time (he laughs) they believe entertainment is a lazy, very unserious career choice and it’s a way of identifying with immorality. More so I was able to take that risk because I am the last child. As a first child, you can’t just stand up and say you’re going for a reality tv show without even thinking of the peaks and pitfalls because at the end of the day, you as the first child, have a duty to the family so every single decision should be very well thought through. Yes, I called it a risk because reality tv can make or ruin you”.
Below are his quick answers to our 23 question
WHAT DO YOU THINK EVERY MAN SHOULD TRY ONCE IN THEIR LIFETIME?
Every man should try being celibate, it works wonders! Your creative juices start to grow, you have a lot of energy, your focus is on point. It’s amazing especially when you’re celibate for a very long time.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 12-YEAR-OLD SELF?
My advice to my 12year old self is; Don’t worry so much young man, everything will work out fine at the end, things will fall in the right places at the right time. Don’t think too much bro, live, be happy because it always ends up alright at the end.
DO YOU THINK RELATIONSHIPS ARE OVERRATED?
NO, THEY ARE NOT! In relationships, I believe that when you’re with the right person, you go from level 30 to level 100, but when you’re with the wrong person, you get from level 100 to level 0. If anything sex is what is overrated, I’m all for healthy, meaningful relationships. You’re like spiritual diamonds when you’re with the right person. God intended us to have a companion, someone you can lean on, confide in, someone you feel safe with. I might sound very old school but then again, I am!
WHO ARE YOU CRUSHING ON?
Well I don’t do crushes right now, when I look at a person, I don’t look outward but inward, do you have a good spirit? What goes on in your mind? Basically, physical looks are only secondary for me. Don’t get me wrong though, I still have my hit and run moments but if I have to be long term with you, I have to get to know you, what your goals are (Long term and short term), your beliefs? Etc. But in my early 20’s, I used to have a crush on Eva Mendez, Halle Berry. Now coming back to Naija, I used to crush on Eku Edewor (the first time I saw her on the red carpet, I was speechless, I thought she was the most beautiful person to step out of Nigeria), then the next person I saw and I was totally transfixed was Beverly Naya, she was dark skinned and had a natural glow and I was sold. Now getting to the older women’s corner, growing up, I’ve had a serious crush on Lillian Bach.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD LIKE? JUNK OR HOME COOKED?
I love food, good food, be it junk or soul! I’m a foodie that’s why I’m battling with some weight issues, but I’m working out right now so don’t judge me. You can’t compare junk food with organic food like your soups, stews etc. I love soup especially Banga soup with either starch, fufu or delta yellow eba.
WHAT IS IN YOUR BUCKET LIST?EVERY MAN HAS ONE.
Wow! You know I’ve never really thought of this, ok the first thing on my bucket list will be to win an Oscar, I mean as an entertainer, winning the Oscars is something I look forward to before I die, if it doesn’t happen then that’s fine but it’s something I look forward to.
The next thing will be to move my career to an international terrain, to be internationally recognized. I don’t just want to be recognized locally, I mean to have the opportunity to do a few Hollywood movies and host major international events, that’s something I would like to accomplish.
I know this sounds very work oriented but I’ve done a lot of things, satisfied my guilty pleasures be it socially, culinary, sexually etc.
IF YOU’RE TO HAVE A PARTY AND YOU’RE TO INVITE 5 PERSONS, WHO WOULD THEY BE?
Well for my appropriate guest list, the first two persons on that list would be Bryan Okwara and Melvin Oduah, reasons being that these guys are very free-spirited, they’re crazy in a good way. I can’t be around overtly serious people; they bore me but these guys, I can curse them out without them getting offended because they’d give me a double dose of what I gave them. They are party animals, they are the kind of guys you want to go to the club with because the moment you all hit the dance floor, you all would be choreographing to the music just because we all get each other. The next persons on that list would be Yvonne “the vixen”, Ijeoma Nebom, Yvonne Nwosu.
Now for my dream guest list, I want to party with Paris Hilton, Khloe Kardashian, the younger will smith because he was fun, and finally Cristiano Ronaldo.
YOU ALWAYS STEP OUT LOOKING FASHIONABLE, NOW WHAT ARE/IS YOUR BEST FASHION ITEM?
Whoa, that’s a tough one! I think my best fashion item has always been my tops. Be it shirts, polo, tunics or whatever as far as they are tops. That’s where my attention is always.
WHAT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND CHEAPEST FASHION ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET?
I don’t really like putting labels on things or giving special attention to how much stuff cost, because being a tv personality, people don’t really expect you to repeat stuff so imagine buying Fendy, Gucci, Prada and then you can’t repeat them. I tend to be very high street in my fashion. But if I were to choose something, it would be between my sunglasses and wrist watches. I know it was a gift but I can’t remember if it was a sunshade or a wristwatch.
The cheapest fashion items in my closet would be my underwear. (he called it pyant)
WHAT FASHION ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET DO YOU WEAR OFTEN?
Well the fashion Item I wear a whole lot would be my neck chains, it’s something I never do without, every time I step out, I make sure I have one on.
UNDERWEAR OR NO UNDERWEAR?
Well, preferably no underwear. It’s very comfortable.
BOXERS, BRIEFS OR THONGS?
Well, it depends on the situation at that given moment, if I want to be sexy then “briefs”, if I want to be naughty, “thongs” but only if she tells me to. When I want to be sporty, “boxer briefs”.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SHOES? (BROGUES, OXFORDS, LOAFERS……)
I don’t have a favorite shoe, I love nice things so my go-to shoe has to be well fitted, very luxurious, very chic and matured. I especially love this UK based Nigerian designer “Jesu Segun London”.
WHO IS OR ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS?
I don’t like to say this is my favorite or whatever, it’s just like asking me what my best food is. But if you insist, I like to go for anyone between PAPA’S ATTIRE, JEFF URBAN (I like Jeff Urban), for blazers, I can’t do without CEASER’S COTOURE and EMMY KASBIT. So these are my go-to designers.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT OVER TIME SINCE YOU BECAME A CELEBRITY?
As a celebrity, you need to have a positive split personality. Just as Beyoncé has “BEYONCE AND SASHA FIERCE” I have managed to develop my own alter ego so you have “SIR UTI AND UTI NWACHUKWU”, Sir Uti is the stern one, the very serious, down to business persona while Uti Nwachukwu is the one that lets his guard down every now and again, he’s always jovial, playful and fun. There are some things that one should hold back from the notice of society because they don’t have to know, that’s when having a split personality becomes helpful.
WHAT THINGS IN LIFE DO YOU THINK ARE STILL A MYSTERY TO YOU?
I’d say spirituality, it’s still a huge mystery to me because one minute you think you have it all figured out and then something else comes up and you just realize that you need to unlearn somethings so you can relearn. I have moved my focus away from religion to spirituality because human beings, in general, are a total mystery to me.
WOULD YOU GIVE UP YOUR TV PERSONALITY STATUS IMMEDIATELY IF IT WOULD PUSH YOU TO A BETTER PLACE?
Yes, I would, you know why? Because I’ve lived! But only if I’d have a shit load of money to an extent where I wouldn’t need to work for cash and I have everything I need. I sure will. And I’ll probably just kick it into my bucket list.
IF YOU WERE GOD FOR A DAY, WHAT INSTANT CHANGE WOULD YOU MAKE IN THE WORLD?
I’ll kill all the greedy people! Everyone causing war, famine, lack of love, I’ll kill them all! Because hate is the major problem we are facing today. Greed comes from selfishness and a lot of selfish people are wicked and a lot of wicked people have no love in their heart which also means they’re filled with hate. I can’t stand when people just make ignorant, hate-filled statements. Selfish people act without thinking of the other person, they don’t care if others die as long as they have what they want and I’m really sick of it, so yeah they have to die for us to move forward.
WHAT MOVIE CAN YOU SEE OVER AND OVER AGAIN WITHOUT GETTING TIRED?
WHAT IS THAT ITEM YOU THINK WOULD ALWAYS BE IN FASHION AND WOULD NEVER GO OUT OF VOGUE?
I’d say LOAFERS! Loafers will never grow old or out of vogue. It’s very lazy and easy and goes with anything and everything, they would always be in fashion.
IF SOMEONE WAS TO NARRATE YOUR LIFE, WHO WOULD THAT BE?
I would want to tell my own story because I know where I’ve been but if I’m to choose someone to narrate my life, it would have to be Anderson my best friend that’s if he happens to be alive though.
WHAT CHARITY OR A CHARITABLE CAUSE IS MOST DESERVING OF MONEY?
I’d say anything between the widows and orphans.
IF MAGIC WAS REAL, WHAT SPELL WOULD YOU TRY TO LEARN FIRST?
Uhm, I’ll say “SHAPESHIFTING”. Because I’ll have so much fun! I’ll first change to the president of any country of my choice, go the bank and collect money
